Here and Now: Christmas cards

My son works with a school with differently abled children as a community and service activity from his school. He feels so enriched when ever he returns back from there. He always says ... we spend a few hours with them and get back so much of love and warmth that is a treasure to keep for life. Currently he is teaching the children music and loves their eagerness to learn and perform.

He will be going there again this Saturday and will be taking Christmas gifts for 2 children fulfilling their wish list. These are the cards I made for them to go with the gift. Hope it brightens their day!

There are some punched strips at the border of the cards. The oval border is outlined by Fevicryl 3D glitter outliner. The Christmas tree, star, and gifts are quilled and the tree and stars have been painted with silver and gold glitter outliner and the ground line below the tree is also with the 3D outliner. the gifts have silk thread wound around to represent a ribbon. The sentiment is stamped and heat embossed. The area between the oval border and rectangle border is distressed with inks.

Catching up series: Christmas cards

The month of October and November when it starts getting cold and dark in Sweden, Christmas is really something that everyone starts looking forward to. These are a few of the cards that I made last year in Stockholm. I will post more of these in a later post. I was experimenting with stamping and heat embossing so you can see those techniques in the cards. I also tried layering the cards and I think it gives a very professional and finished look to the cards.

Challenge inspired card

When I started quilling, I used to take time to add borders to the card or layer the paper before adding my quilling to it. But lately, I have been just quilling on the card. So when I saw a challenge with a sketch at Come and get it Challenges, I just had to give it a try.

After looking through different colour combinations, this is what I came up with. Hope you like it!

The beautiful tangles.

Looking for new designs to quill, I dug into my embroidery book from a life time ago and decided to make the pattern on a card.

It looks so amazing in real life. The effects it produces looking from different angles is beautiful.

Here's how the picture looks from far.

And closer up.

And from an angle.

Happy 13th Birthday

My son turned 13 in September. He loves sushi and can have it any time. Whenever we go to our favorite Sushi joint here in Dubai, the chef's recognize him and prepare a special platter for him with only the sushi variety that he loves. So for his coming to teens B'day, I made a Sushi platter for him... on a card. And there is his favorite soya sauce to accompany in a bowl! The sentiments are hand written trying to imitate Japanese style of writing.

Renewing the Marriage Vows - Anniversary Card

Last October, our marriage turned 20. That's a big number! A roller coaster journey that has taken us together changing countries 7 times. So this big special occasion needed a very special card!

This card took me so long to quill. The orange rays coming out from the heart are made by gluing 2 paper strips together to give it a stiffness and then just glued down. The part where it pierces through the letters LOVE, I first quilled the letters and then stuck the orange rays splitting them and sticking further to give a continuous look. The scrolls and lines inside the heart were again painstakingly done. If you look closely at the centre top right within the heart, you will see tiny strips flaring into a spire all continuously increasing in length. The tutorial for making the stars is coming up soon.

I would say this is my most intricate work up till now. Hope you like it!

Happy Mother's day!

As I have been away from blogging almost the whole of last year, I have missed out on posting my creations for all the occasions that we celebrated. It has been a year of the milestones. First it was my younger son's landmark B'day where he entered the teens, our 20th marriage anniversary, my father turning 70 this Jan and then in Feb my son turned 18, an adult. Of course there were other occasions for which I made cards as well, that being my hubby's B'day, my mum's B'day, the Diwali when my husband was travelling and so I hid a Diwali card in his suitcase for him to open on the Diwali day. and of course the card that my husband made for me on my B'day. This was the first time ever that he had himself made a card and it was so artistic!

In the next few posts I will be posting all of these cards from last year, but today being Mother's day in UAE, I will post the card I made for my mother and couriered it to her in India last year. As my parents had not seen my work in actual other than in pictures until now, my mother's reaction was "Oh my God, its beautiful!"

So here are the pictures of the card.

Flowers for mother on a sunny day!

A close up of the quilled H and B.
I made each flower by sticking together two 15 cm strips, one red and one white, passing the glued strip through the crimpler and quilling it into a teardrop. The double colour gives a beautiful shaded effect when you tilt the card up and down.

The grass is made just by folding paper in zigzag fashion and the leaves are hand folded  to give a double effect.
The ladybird is a sticker.
